If Legal Aid was granted and you were under the impression that, that was the case, then you should complain providing the solicitors were made fully aware of all your personal circumstances.

You have avenues to complain use them.

Indeed it seems likely that I will have to go with the option of complaining them (would have done regardless tbh) but I am also trying to see if there is anything else that I might be missing just in case the complain fails to resolve in my favour. I will surely be trying my best to minimise the chances of someone else in similar situation as me getting stung in future with these firms.

What surprises me is that how clear the guidelines are on gov uk website. Even a normal person can tell what level of legal aid would be possible based on their income and equity yet solicitors who does this day in day out failed to make us aware of the consequences.
