Any claim where the PI element exceeds £1,000 is allocated to the Fast Track - based on OP's initial post, this was going to be inevitable in any event.
It's common for solicitors who sit on a panel to not be local, the same way an insurance company doesn't have to be local. My firm sits on a number of panels and our clients are nearly always miles and miles away, and we never meet them.
And the "he gets paid" comment, well, yes, but usually around £100.00 per hour, far below any lawyer's charge out rate!
