Still not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but here goes:
Basically, UK customs have charged me import VAT on a parcel which was not liable for VAT (because it was a customer return, to my small business). When this happens (it isn't the first time...) there is no way to get in touch with them about the error, you just have to cough up and then send off your request for reimbursement to their mysterious postal address as they have no email or telephone contact number.
The parcel that they have charged me tax on was clearly marked as a return on the customs form, additionally it was sent in its original packaging with invoice and 'returning as agreed' written all over it, there was absolutely no question that it was a return. I am going to send everything off to them proving this, but the last time I did this, I heard nothing in response to my first letter or a follow up letter - they just completely ignored me and I never saw my money again.
This time, if they don't respond I want to find a way of chasing them up on it and forcing them to at least engage with me. Can I take them to the small claims court? I have a postal address, but only the one where I have to send the documentation. The disputed amount will only be about £70. Is this enough? There was another £65 last time they did it, but this was in 2012 so I imagine it is too late to do anything about that one now.
Any advice very much appreciated!
