  • County Court Databases?

In this era of information access, especially via the internet, does anyone know of a free site which gives info re County Court cases and judgements?

It occurs to me that the same, or very similar, cases come up time after time.

It would be very useful to know what arguments are being used and the subsequent rulings; not for 'precedent', but it may help when one needs to put together a POC or a defense.

I'm sure you probably know about Trust Online which you can search for specific cases, but I don't know of a collection of judgments - the CCJ equivalent of Balii or however it's spelt!

That would be great but I don't believe any database exists, free or otherwise. County Court judgments are almost always classified as unreported.

In fact I doubt if even the MOJ collate any County Court case information or statistics at all. During the bank charges test case when the County Courts were swamped with stayed cases they didn't even have a clue how many there were until Tom Brennan convinced them that it was in everyone's interest - including the MOJ's - to know. They ended up having to check all the cases manually and produced the spreadsheet attached which they still couldn't be sure was accurate.

Probably a long shot, but wonder if this info could be obtained via a FOI request ?

Ive had free trials from several of these subscription sites over the past few years.
Lexis Nexis (Butterworths) was the best, they somehow missed the expiry date of my free trial and I ended up having full access to all its site for 2 years+,
I dont remember any of the sites I accessed providing county court cases though.

                  Charity,

I found both those links as well. However, they provide only lists of the cases taking place, not detailed accounts of the case which I think is what you're after. :beagle:

                    Dear all,

Thank you for signing up to this new Google group. We are a handful of
people so far, but please spread the word.

Anyone can join the group, but for the time being I am keeping our
conversations closed to group members. We could open the group publicly in
                    due course.

I assume you found the group via this post on the MoJ's contracts with
                    Bailii and Courtel.
                    http://meejalaw.com/2011/07/20/who-holds-our-courts-data-fois-reveal-...

My primary interest is in making public legal data accessible to all, in
useable formats. I think Bailii is a fantastic resource but it could be
                    improved.

As I see it, issues for us to discuss include:

                    - Access to digital copies of judgments, claim forms and other relevant
                    data
                    - Usability and accessibility of basic legal statistics (eg. types of
                    claim in one year)
                    - Accessing court listings and court results
                    - Accessing court transcripts
                    - Accessing court as a journalist or member of the public (in person!)
                    - Accessing reporting restrictions
                    - Accessing / making court recordings
                    - Accessing up to date legislation and legal information

My research interest is in civil law, but I would welcome wider discussion
                    too.
For some background reading I recommend the chapter on open justice in
Heather Brooke's latest book (The Silent State) and these blog posts:

                    - http://heatherbrooke.org/2010/article-court-secrecy/
                    - http://talkaboutlocal.org.uk/courtreporting/

I should make it clear that my background is in journalism and I would
strongly welcome input from legal academics and lawyers, as well as
journalists / bloggers etc. Please feel free to criticise and correct me!

                    *So, what next?
                    *

                    - William Perrin, founder of TalkAboutLocal, has just left an interesting
comment on my blog, indicating his view that the MoJ is open to reviewing
                    how it manages its data:

                    http://meejalaw.com/2011/07/20/who-holds-our-courts-data-fois-reveal-...

                    - We are hoping to hold a seminar on these issues at City University
London in the autumn - I'll keep you posted on that.

                    - I thought that an open letter to a relevant MoJ person/committee might
be the next step for this group: what do you think?

I look forward to getting this discussion going. Thank you for your
                    interest.

                    Kind regards

                    Judith Townend
