Hey all,
Not sure what to do as my head is still in quite a bit of a tizzy over this.
We stayed in a well-known budget hotel this weekend and upon returning home, 200 miles away, realised that we were missing two items - a game controller >£100 and a piece of jewellery >£50
The piece of jewellery I helped my partner take off when we returned on Saturday night and it was on the bedside table on the Sunday morning. We went out for breakfast for two hours and the cleaners were doing our corridor when we left, and when we came back, so would have seen us leave. At this hotel, your room is NOT cleaned and coffee/tea is not replenished - you have to get more sachets yourself.
(The controller was in a bag and we didn't get round to taking it out at all so didn't notice it was gone until we returned home.)
We've phoned the hotel and the items have not been found or handed in, in spite of the room being cleaned between guests, so it's quite clear what's happened.
Do hotel key cards show dates and times for room access, in the case of master keys that cleaners use? I want to know what I need to ask in order to find out if any staff DID enter our room during out stay, because it absolutely wasn't for cleaning or replenishment.
How do I go forward with this? Do I also contact the police and where do I stand on making a claim for the lost items? I don't believe the Hotel Proprietors Act applies here as there was no sign in reception and even if it did, it looks like the hotel have been negligent with our belongings.
