  • email contract??

Hi, we are holding a celebration of life for my fathers passing. We emailed a local business that rents a piece of land for functions and he very kindly offered this free to us. We later asked if it would be possible to camp on the land the night before and his response was that we were taking advantage of him as in his eyes we were planning a family holiday and has now said we cannot have the land at all!!.....Two tents so that we were there early to set up small marques, catering vehicle loos etc before everyone arrives at mid day. This function is the 21st August so need to know where we stand, do we have any legal right as we have an email even though no official contact has been signed, just emails?

well to add things after would suggest possible confrontation. the circumstances have changed as your original request was agreed (no fee) which was a favour., , other additional requirement (more so you failed to mention camping etc etc_. suggest as to save time and venues going elsewhere, move on,??? the follow up request is suspect???

It was merely a request to see if it would be ok, not telling him that we would be camping there, so we weren't adding, just politely asking. If he said no, then that would have been fine. We did offer to pay in the first instance and also in the follow up correspondence. He is being rather nasty and it's coming across that he has a chance to rent it out and using this to get out of his original offer.....which is a bit late in the day for us now to find and change the venue. Just wondering if we have any legal rights?

You said 'they rent the land', but as you've mentioned it was for a celebration of your fathers life (father's passing), they offered it free. You could offer some money and see if that helps. Maybe speak to the land owner over the phone.

Yes, they rent it out for special functions. I have offered to pay whatever is the going charge. He won't answer the phone, just txt's now and being as polite and diplomatic as one can over txt messages, they never give the emotion or context.

Have you tried the Council, I doubt they have had lots of people wanting to hire venues (most council's are struggling financially), you might able to negotiate good rates. Don't be too disappointed, you'll definitely find somewhere.
