  • Legal documents from my solicitor

    Hi guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, long time viewer, but first time posting anything.

I had some legal work don’t by a firm (which was abysmal), but they have all my original documents, documents produced by another law firm etc. My statements, literally everything. can I request these back? I do owe them money, but they’re not giving me a straight figure, seems like every time I ask they’re unsure.

Can I get my original documentation back, before I settle the figure? I’m happy for them to keep the stuff they had done in the mean time, whilst they give me a figure? Or legally can they keep it until I pay it back?

The solicitor can retain client documents until he is paid.

If the solicitors want to exercise that right then I think it’s reasonable to expect them to set out clearly what the debt is by submitting an invoice. If they refuse to tell you how much money you owe while at the same time refusing to return your property on the basis that you owe them money then you are in a catch 22 position. You could raise a complaint about this with the solicitors. If they then fail to either return the papers or submit an invoice you can refer them to the regulators.
