Learning Disability Week is a week of national campaigning and awareness raising run by Mencap and will take place 18 - 24 June 2012.
This year’s Learning Disability Week will be from Monday 18 June to Sunday 24 June. It will continue the great work of Learning Disability week 2011, which saw the launch of the ‘Stand by me’ campaign against hate crime.
Over the last year, the work of Mencap campaigners has meant police forces up and down the country have embraced the ‘Stand by me’ campaign and have been tackling disability hate crime. This progress is excellent but we need to make sure that it continues.
We have a long way to go to make disability hate crime a thing of the past, but we have a good starting point in the 'Stand by me’ campaign. Learning Disability Week is a great opportunity to keep disability hate crime at the top of the police’s agenda and for people with a learning disability, their families and local campaigners to build stronger relationships with the police.
If you have any questions, you can email campaigns@mencap.org.uk to find out more.
Take action
We want as many people as possible to get involved with Learning Disability Week this year, so the police know that tackling disability hate crime is important to lots of people.
Learning Disability Week events
There will be lots of local events happening across the country during Learning Disability Week in 2012
Police and crime commissioners
In England (except London) and Wales, there is also another brand new opportunity for influencing the police. Newly elected police and crime commissioners (PCCs) are being created to take on the role of the existing police authorities and they will decide what is most important for the police to work on.
