  • Relationship breakdown and still in contract for an apartment until August 2023

    Hi

I have recently broken up with my partner of 3 years and we are both joint tenants on a 1 bedroom apartment. I have looked at my contract and there is no 6 month break claus. Is there any advice on how I may possibly get out of the apartment as I cannot continue to share as it is starting to become a very toxic place to live. We are both not in a position to leave and start paying rent somewhere else until we are not paying the rent on the current property.

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

There is no good news here. You are both bound by the contract.

You might ask the landlord whether he will agree to an early termination of the tenancy. It may help if you can persuade him that there is a good reason to do this, such as that he will be able to let the flat out easily for a higher rent.

Litigants in Person should download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf
