  • challenging the outcome of an interview

I shall try to keep this short and pertinent. Any constructive advise would be gratefully received.

I applied to a company for the same role, but in 2 different locations. I was short listed for interview for both jobs and attended them. The interviews were both based on core behaviours and therefore I knew almost everything that would be asked of me. I knew exactly what to say as I had fully prepared.

So I went to the first interview. I answered all questions and I was given a "well done" by one of the interviewers at the end of it. I was possitive I had done enough to get the job. I actually wanted this job more as there was extra payments, like city allowance, which would have bumped up my salary considerably.

A couple of days later, I went for the second interview. All the questions were the same (albeit in a different order). In actual fact, I thought I was not less articulate than in the first interview.

The following week, I was offered role 2 and rejected for role 1. I was annoyed, as I really wanted role 1 due to the extra money! I thought it very strange that I gave a better interview in 1 than 2 and that I was given a "well done" by one of the interviews! I have to say it was a perfect interview.

Anyway, I wrote to the hiring manager for role 1 to get some feedback. All he wrote back was that I was unsuitable for the job- nothing else!

I wrote back almost immediately, stating that if I am to become better at interviews in the future, I had to understand exactly what it is I did that was less better than the candidates that got the job.

I waited 2 weeks for a reply, but to no avail. I then contacted resourcing and came across a sympathetic member of staff. He wrote to the manager for more feedback. About a week later, the manager wrote back to me explaining that the reason why I did not get the job was because I scored below average on my motivation and scored a low mark on safety- bear in mind the interviewers for role 2 did not see a lack of motivation and safety skills in me. Furthermore, I was still no further in understanding exactly what parts of my answers scored low marks and why.

So, I queried it further and the resourcing guy stated that the matter would be passed to another manager to look at. 5 weeks later, there was no response. I called up the resourcing guy who then made arrangements from a HR manager to call me. The HR manager was not there to provide me any extra information, she just wanted the matter to be closed. She didn't really know about my case and she was unable to provide me with any feedback about my interview.

So I am now 2 weeks away till the acas deadline. I feel the company are playing me for a fool. Something tells me something fishy is going on. Is it discrimination? Maybe, but it would be so difficult to prove. Perhaps, if the (public sector) company ever release stats on minority candidates, who applied for role 1 and eventually was offered the 13 jobs on offer, I might have a better idea if discrimination took place.

So I would be grateful for anyone's thoughts on this. Should I go to acas right now for early conciliation? Should I give the company another 2 weeks to provide me with the information I need and then decide whether to go to acas?

I am not really sure what you are trying to achieve. Clearly you want the role you didn't get because of the enhanced pay - just a thought, is the pay enhanced because costs are enhanced- so after deductions and extra costs would you actually be better off?

You are talking about discrimination but you were offered a role that you say is the same so I think you may have an uphill struggle with that.

      Did you accept role 2?

How do you feel your new employer will look at you if you are kicking up a stink about role 1 - could it be that on the day, there was someone better for role 1? Interviews are subjective I am afraid and however qualified you are and however good you seem if you do not 'click' with someone that can be the deciding factor- no discrimination just the way it is.
