Recruitment discrimination?

Hi everyone

My friend is a post person and has been for several months - through an agency (working for Royal Mail).

He has submitted several applications to the Royal Mail when roles have been advertised - to several different sorting offices. He has failed to get even one interview - and one particular office have advertised several times.

My friend is black and, although I hate to say it, I believe this is making a difference (btw he does not want to consider this). There is no other explanation as recruitment must be on the skills to do the job - and they are already doing it (satisfactorily)!- but not to even secure an interview??? Royal Mail have recruited 2 new people at the office where he is working.

Any ideas on how he can get to the bottom of why he is being overlooked?

If a white person made an application with similar skills living in the same geographic area and was given an interview then this would be good evidence. However, there are issue fees for claims and specialist advice would be needed. I would approach your local CAB.

With the Royal Mail you often have to do an aptitude/skills test as part of the application process - do you know how he got on with that?

Also - ethicity etc is usually not included in the application process - sometimes on a separate monitoring form but they should be separated out before it even got to any decision making processes.

If you are facing discrimination regarding job you need to contact legal specialists for help. First of all check the applications which he has submitted to royal mail offices and then consult professionals near your place.

Hi Foxy,

Possibly your friend's instincts are right.

The PO can be choosy. Managing staff with illness, absence or work-rate issues is an absolute pain for them.

He works for them now. They have his work records. One day off sick, not being Mr Speedy, slightly higher than average error rate... Harsh? Yes, but why wouldn't you pick "No Sick, Speedy Gozales, RoboPostie"??

Leaping to race/disability/etc reasons risks missing the obvious (imho).
