  • Change of contract

My friend has been with his employer full time for 5+years and his boss now claims he wants to reduce his hours to a 3 day week. The boss says he isn't working fast enough, it is in construction (my friend is still working at the rate he has for the past 5+ years).

his solution to my friend not working fast enough is to reduce the hours he works.

my friend has 5 years until he retires.

Although we have no proof we also expect the reason for this change is another employee has asked for a raise, and the boss wants to keep this man.

It it is a small company so their is no HR department.

the boss said my friend could come up with a alternative solution to the problem by the end of the working week and they would discuss the decision then.

Where does my friend stand? Can he refuse to take the cut in hours? The employer is not short of work, he is advertising for new staff at a lower wage.
