  • Business Issue

    Hi,

I am writing today seeking some advice after recent events.

Long story short, I have been working for a telesales company for the last 6 weeks whereby I have recently been let go after bringing up an issue regarding pay. I was subject to receive an agreed sum (below taxation inc. expenses) at the end of the month. However I have only received 25% of this and expected to get the rest "in due course"

The business itself made me feel very uncomfortable and at times had me questioning the legality of the service. What pushed me over the edge was the "new leads" that the manager didn't mind hiding the fact that getting them weren't exactly straightforward.

In truth this is just one of many things that set alarm bells ringing for me and I wanted to know what I should do? I am willing to discuss things in further details with the right people.

    Regards,
    Tom

    Hello Tom,

So your real grievance then is simply that they have to given you the correct amount of pay?

      Hello Rob,

Thank you for your swift reply.

Yes my main concern is the situation regarding payment for the services I have given the company. Whereby I believe that they have not honoured their terms of agreement whilst I am apprehensive of receiving the full payment after being told to leave.

However, I am also very concerned by the business practices and I would like further advice; whether that's a referral to governing body, just to put my mind at ease that everything is within regulations. This is not only for my peace of mind but for the clients receiving these calls. Whilst there is a chance I may be overreacting given this is my first time within the industry.

Having met many people who have been 'seduced' into working for a promised pot of gold for such telesales positions, I can report that everyone of them lost out in some way. Was this a self employed position? Do you have a contract detailing exactly what you would be paid for?

And when you say 'What pushed me over the edge was the "new leads" that the manager didn't mind hiding the fact that getting them weren't exactly straightforward' . what exactly do you mean if that was a pivotal point?

Most telesales jobs are based on low remuneration, particularly if the product was hard to sell. What type of business was this?

          Hi Snoopy,
There was no specific contract that which I signed because I was initially taken on under a probation period whereby I was taken on for another month after completion with an agreed base payment (verbally) for my services not inc. any commission earned.
I referred to that particular point in time as a turning point because it was at that stage; under my own interpretation, I would be working with stolen data. The manager made no hesitation in referring to these leads as "Glengarry Glen ross" in a jesting manner.
The business changed it's service 3 times within 6 weeks and under my own experience I would refer to it as a boiler room.
I get the feeling that this is just a harsh lesson that I have to suck up and move on. However, part of me feels extremely hard done by and want to put a stop to this particular individual, who seems to have history and prevent others being sucked in by seemingly "professional" job advertisements and prospects.

Hi again .... I agree, it is simply a harsh lesson that you would be best moving on from, if not solely for your own sanity. The awful thing about the business that you describe is that everyone taken on ( as you were ) will effectively end up 'just passing through'. With regard to stopping the trade from proliferating further, I would hope someone on here with more knowledge can guide you on that one!

The telemarketing regulatory bodies are Ofcom and The Information Commissioner;s Office
Possibly make a report to those bodies?
