Some of you will know about my daughter, who - with me - has been grateful for advice given in response to my previous threads.
She was recently interviewed for a job in Totton, some 9 miles away. At interview, she was told the interview was for two jobs, the one she applied for and a similar job in Winchester, 18 miles away. She was asked her preference and responded that she wanted to be considered for the job she applied for - ie in Totton. Today she was offered the job in Winchester, in recognition of her travelling further, they would pay her slightly more. Naturally she was thrilled to be offered a job and it was only later that she considered the ramifications.
Petrol required for travelling to Totton five days a week . plus bridge tolls and free parking would cost about £18 per week.
Petrol required for travelling to Winchester plus car parking five days a week would cost about £45 per week.
Against this, the "slightly higher" pay offer for the Winchester job is £373 per year (£7.17 per week).
So doing the job in Winchester would cost her £19.83 more a week than doing the same job in Totton.
She desperately needs a job but taking the Winchester job would leave her with no money for herself after she had paid basic living expenses. The advantages would be learning other systems and of course it would be down to her to try to advance herself with that firm, if she wants to work for them long-term.
Given that she applied for, and went to an interview for, the advertised job in Totton and did not know until it was disclosed at interview that the firm similarly employed people to do the exact same thing in Winchester, is there any point in complaining and if she does complain, is there any body to complain to other than the firm?
Incidentally, the firm concerned is Southern Health, the NHS firm that is being called to account before Parliament because of all the complaints.
Thank you for your interest and any opinions
