Ex Employer seeking overpayment

Hi, hope you can offer me some advice.

I used to work for Saga Insurance. I left in July of last year due to poor mental health. I had been off sick since April.

Very recently I had a letter demanding a cheque for an 'overpayment' of £1200 that Saga says I owe them. I am so angry and confused as I never noticed any over payment.

Apparantly I have 7 days to respond.
The letter was sent to my ex partners address.

Have they included a breakdown showing the elements that make up the overpayment?

No. Just a demand for £1200 by cheque.

Write back to them saying you do not acknowledge any amount they claim is owed. And ask them for a breakdown showing the elements and calculations along with relevant dates of financial transactions and reasoning that leads them to now, over 6 months later believe they made an overpayment to you! And make clear you were never aware of such an overpayment and demanding full repayment of £1,200 within 7 seven days is unreasonable, along with demanding it be paid by cheque. As not everyone has a cheque book, plus its up to the person paying how they choose to pay!

My wage slips look like someone was drunk as some of them look really messy. One month says I was due to be paid zero pounds yet my bank account says I was paid £1400 (probably the amount they are refering to). Can I upload these documents for someone to look at?

Yes please do, minus personal and company details - don't use marker pen though, just cover personal details with piece of paper or something as wouldn't what you destroying your own potential evidence!

We need some information from you to unscramble this.
1. Can you post up how much you actually received from them, and when?
e.g. Jan - £xxxx-xx
etc.
2. How many hours/week were you supposed to work?
3. On what date in April did you go off sick?
4. Did you take any holiday while you worked there?
5. Do you how a written contract for that period of employment?

I am not sure if I were you whether I would tell or show the employer your personal account/ statement unless they get a court order. The letters do not state when the overpayments were made, do not inform you what those overpayments were in relation to. What is your normally weekly pay on average? Do you have over time rates?

What were your employers arrangements for sick pay? ie. how long could you have off sick before SSP ?

Indeed, or give Saga a call and ask them to email you over a copy - and the employee handbook - also your overtimes/incentives etc - what dates are they from eg 20th April - 20th May paid on 28th May etc ?
