  • Pay consultation - what can I do?

I’m looking for some advice with how the company I work for has gone about a pay consultation and the changes that appear to be implemented.

For context, the company in question is a large UK based charity of which I work within the IT department. Commonly within the IT dept. we receive a low wage which is then topped up by a ‘market supplement’. This supplement is supposed to better align our pay with that of market rates (it falls painfully short of its goal, but hey it is a charity).

Anyway, in my situation my Market Supplement represents almost 15% of my yearly salary and my contract states that if the organisation wants to change this they would have to provide me with 12 months’ notice. Within the communications during the pay consultation, messages from the HR dept. came through saying that the notice period had changed down to 3 months’ earlier on in 2015. A number of us contested this since we were not made aware and have certainly not signed anything in agreement.

It now appears that we will all soon have to sign a new contract that will adjust the notice period of our market supplements. We will have 12 weeks to agree to the new terms and if we don’t that we will automatically roll over to the new contract regardless.

There are a whole load of other issues going on which don’t seem to be too well thought out, but I won’t bore you with those here.

This all seems a little underhand to me and leaves me in a position where my income could effectively be reduced by 15% within 3 months. Such a cut would be a serious issue for me and would leave me with no option than to find another job. The cynic in me sees this as a way for the company to effectively make me and others redundant without the need for a pay-out.

None of this is 100% confirmed just yet, but alot of people are of the same understanding so in preparation, my question is… Where do I stand and what, other than find a new job, can I do?

    Thanks.
