  • Pay rights ??

Hi all - wonder if anyone can help - I have worked for a large retail company for 6 years - I was internally promoted to assistant manager approx 3 years ago - was offered a new pay rate and because of the secrecy in the company agreed to it as it was impossible to find out if it was fair or not - there doesn't seem to be any pay grades for promoted staff.
I have now found out that a colleague doing the same job is on substantially more than me (£6000 more) - we have the same responsibilities and work the same total hours. The difference is that they have been recruited from another employer - my colleague is very inexperienced and I have been training her how to do our job - I have nothing against this colleague but I just wonder if I have a case against my company for unequal pay - can't be right that we are employed to do the same job but get paid substantially different rates ?
Any constructive advice would be gratefully received.

    Re: Pay rights ??

When you say inexperienced, do you mean in the industry at management level or just in regards to company operating procedures which i assume is whgat your training her up on!

If the company recruited her from another company, then she most have been very good at her job. What the company offered her salary wise likely reflects her experience and management skills in the industry itself and what the company expects to gain from having her as an employee, and not her knowledge of your companies operating procedures etc.

There is no law against what the company has done to be honest and i suspect there's no equality issues here too, as the company would likely be able to show that she has highly sort after skill and experience and likely more experience and skills, possibly even qualifications/degree in business management etc.

My advise would be to talk to you manager about it informally and say your concerned that shes on 6K more than you and that you feel the difference in pay to yours is unfair and that you would like your pay rate to be reviewed with a view to increasing your pay. No promises they will increase your pay though.
Please note that this advice is given informally, without liability and without prejudice. Always seek the advice of an insured qualified professional.
