• What is the purpose of a disciplinary investigation?

I thought the investigation collected evidence and then decided if a rule had been broken. If a rule had been broken then it goes to a disciplinary. If no rule was broken then no disciplinary. My manager told me that the disciplinary is where it is decided if a rule has been broken. That cant be right because if it was, there would always be a disciplinary after every investigation.

Hi Natalie1 - you are correct; the purpose of the investigation is to determine if there is a disciplinary case to answer, i.e. has there been a wrongdoing? The purpose of the disciplinary is to determine what action will be taken.

Re: What is the purpose of a disciplinary investigation?

The investigation into me didn't show any rules had been broken. The company have stated in writing they were not sure if a rule had been broken but because one could have been this meant there was a disciplinary case to answer. The allegations they made were not based on the results of the investigation and the disciplinary itself was just a fishing exercise for information to prove their allegations. I feel if they were not sure a rule had been broken, the issue should have gone back for further investigation. My manager says that is not how it works.
