• been sacked for no reason

Hello i have been working in a small shop for just over a month doing 20 hours a week
when i started my boss asked if i wanted to be paid cash in hand i said no i want to pay my tax and insurance
They are 3 other people who work part time ( but in fact work full time)
while i was there i was asked again by him if i would like to be paid for just 16 hours the rest he would pay me cash in hand like the other workers that work for him (one of the workers is his family member)
this he says would keep me under the £10,000 so would not have to pay anything again i said no its fine please pay my tax and insurance i don't claim tax credits or any other benefits
he said it would be ok and that if anyone from tax office came or any other person he would say that i was working these hours and he would have paper work as proof there would be nothing they could do he said he knows the ins and outs of it all
I asked him to pay my wages into my bank as it just didn't feel right at least then i would have proof that i was working for him.
while working for him the other people do at least 35 to 40 hours a week but he pays them for the 16 hours the rest he pays them in cash this is so they can claim benefits etc
i did my job well never had any complaints from boss but in the 4 weeks i was working there was no contract, no rota, i didn't know when i was in or when i was off he would just tell me when i was leaving work if i was going to be in or not getting paid on Fridays
I had to ring him when it got to 8pm on Friday nights as he always forgot or said he was busy.
no mileage paid when using my car i was asking him every other day for these things so on Saturday morning at 10am i sent him a message asking for my wage slips as i had not got any i have been working over a month with him not giving me one and i needed them for tax purposes
I didn't get a reply until 5pm he said that things were not working out and that he was cancelling the shifts i was supposed to be working and he would pay me my weeks wage that was it
I feel he has singled me out as i was asking too many questions and i would not be paid cash in hand like the other workers i told him that i should be given a weeks notice
He said he didn't owe me anything only the week i worked and i have no rights as not been working for him long enough if i had gone along with what he wanted like the other worker i would be still working it seems so unfair do i have any rights at all any help please

Re: been sacked for no reason

Hi Sugarplum - the likelihood is that you were dismissed because you went against the grain; however, your employer can dismiss you within the first two years of your employment without reason, which I suspect you know already.

Personally I would report the employer to HMRC for tax avoidance.

I think it's reasonable to take that as one month, in which case you should have received 1 week's notice, or payment in lieu of.

Using the annual leave calculator on Gov.uk, you would have accrued 9 hours and 49 minutes' paid leave, based on a 20-hour week.
