• Handing in notice before salary increase

Hello all,

First time poster here, looking for some help from the experts.

I was recently informed, in writing, of a salary increase due to start from tomorrow 20th October. Since then, I have received and accepted a job with another company, and have handed my 3 month notice in. My manager today informed me they would be withdrawing my salary increase as I have given my intention to leave.

I'm just wondering if it's acceptable for them to do this? When in my interview for my new job, when they asked my salary, I referred to my increased amount (mistake in hindsight), so if it doesn't go through, my p60/45 will show a lower figure than I stated.

Just looking for some advice if possible.

With thanks

.....but your new job did not just hire you because you're paid a certain amount of money. Furthermore, the company does have the right to rescind a salary increase prior to the date it starts.

Many thanks for your reply leclerc,

I agree with what you are saying. My only concern is that my adjusted salary put me in a better negotiation situation with the new company. I don't want them to think I was being untrue if it turns out the salary increase is revoked and start out on the wrong foot

Can you explain why they have this right.
If an increase has been offered, and implicitly accepted, surely it becomes a term of the contract.
Terms of a contract can't be changed or varied without agreement.
Or have I misunderstood something?

I'm inclined to agree with des8 - if the offer of a salary increase has been made by the employer, and accepted by the employee, I don't think the employer can simply retract the offer.

Actually I am going to slightly backtrack and get back to the basic questions of the increase. Was the increase conditional or unconditional?
If conditional what were the terms. I may have spoken a little too soon so apologies.....
