    I have a contract that says my core hours are 06:00 - 09:45 on the days I work ( 3 days a week), it says additional hours are worked on a "flexi" basis but no amount of hours is mentioned neither is a finish time, however when the job was advertised and when I filled in a form at the interview 12:00 was stated as the finish time, the line manager who was in charge when I started has left and now they are saying quite arbitrarily that they want to impose a finish time of 14:00 "when business needs require", they want to maintain the right to have a 09:45 finish, they want to have the right to end the shift at any time after 09:45 and at the same time to demand that people be prepared to work until 14:00. and then send us home at 10.

    Is this legal?

    They can do this change as long as no equality issues are relevant such as child care etc. Royal Mail has this problem as the majority of postmen took the job so they could finish at a decent time and pick the kids up.


    You need to be asking for friendly friendly policies and applications if you have kids and if this is imposed. The employer has a statutory duty to consider all applications.

    If this is imposed without your consent then you need to submit a grievance saying you disagree with ths contractual term for the following reasons. It is most important you put at the top of the letter you are "Working under protest"

    When an employer makes a contractual term you do not agree with you that three choices:

    1. accept the change
    2. accept the change and work under protest
    3. resign and claim constructive dismissal (Not advised)
