  • Not the right fit to stack shelves.

I applied for a job stacking shelves in a toy shop. It was just a case of sending a CV, no application form asking for personal details etc. The advert said experience beneficial but not necessary as full training provided; Ive got the experience as ive worked in stores before and managed a toy department. It said basic IT skills and ability to use email, confidence to communicate and interact with colleagues management and customers, ability to follow policy and procedures; all that was covered in my CV and I got plenty experience of it all. Then it said physically fit as this role will require some manual handling; I regard myself as physically fit but of course they could only determine that from an interview.

I didn’t get an interview; I got an email saying ‘We have reviewed your application. Unfortunately, you are not the right fit for the position at this time’.

Had they said not got the job due being over qualified, or due to the vast amount of applicants, I could have dealt with that. But what does not the right fit mean? How can they judge that off a CV?

They didn’t ask for references so do not know I was dismissed or that I am going to a tribunal. The only thing I can think of is they got a rough idea of my age based on my CV and they consider me too old to work in their store. I have shopped in this store and to be honest I don’t think there is anyone over 30 in the place.

Do they have to reply if I ask for clarification on what ‘not the right fit’ means?

I suspect it means that from your CV you did not fit the companies profile for the position.
It often comes down to the "Feel" one gets from a CV, over many years of reviewing individual for promotion
or role changes something comes up in as we had Profiles of Rolls and Promotions some you could see that
they were a candidate worth taking forward others just " did not fit".

You can certainly ask for an explanation but no guarantee of a reply or that you will like it if there is one.

Or i could well be that they had already found their successful applicant. I suspect the letter was generic and sent to all those who's application was unsuccessful. Be thankful they actually responded to you as majority don't bother to reply at all!

Also i suspect you were over qualified. You used to manage a whole toy department, they just wanted a basic shelf stacker!
