Check your contract of employment.

What Is the course, as it may be a requirement that formal training has to be given.

Ste0207 - welcome to the forum.

It depends on what your contract says. If you want to upload it we'll happily take a look. If you do, make sure you remove any personal information about your employer and you.

Agreed it depends on your contract, but it may also depend on what the course is i.e. a legally required training course due to line of work your in. Some employees in certain sectors are required to take certain course by law for their line of work and follow them up with refresher courses as well. It may not necessary be down to line of work either but down to your duties i.e. First Aider for example!

Hmm... even if the course is a legal requirement the employer could have possibly arranged it for a normal working day. We'll probably never know.

A normal working day for the OP but possibly a non working day for another member of staff. Don't believe it would be 1 to 1 training.

Yes, which is why I said "the employer could have possibly..."

Exactly we've no way of knowing, and its very likely there's a clause in the contract that permits the employer to reasonably request employees attend such training days, plus the date the training falls on may not even be decided by the employer but by the company that provides the training. The fact they are being paid for the extra day, says to me the employer is most probably in the right here and acting reasonably.
