I am posting this up on behalf of my partner's employer.
A couple of thefts have occurred at the business where she works - particularly, cash being removed from a till outside working hours. To make this more of a puzzle, it looks like it is an "inside job" as keyed access to the business is being used, as well as the disarming of the security system. There are only 4 people who officially hold keys for access and know the code to the security system, two of those are the employer and my partner, and both can be accounted for at the times of the two thefts.
The employer has asked about installing CCTV to cover the till area in question, but does NOT want to inform the staff about its installation (it will be an open installation with no covert cameras used) as the idea is, she needs to gain evidence on who is doing this by catching, and recording, the person in the act.
So, the big Q - can she legally do this?
Any sound advice would be appreciated.
