I left my former employer 13 months ago. Whilst I've been happy in my new role, the sector is very different and comes with additional challenges that contribute nothing but non value added work. When with my previous employer, I left on the basis that I was a contractor and wanted to be converted to perm. I work in internal recruitment, and the month I left, I had been the top recruiter in the team for 3 months running.
Exactly 7 working days ago, I met up with my ex boss (he didn't hire me when I joined initially, but was in charge when I left), and we had a 1.5 hour discussion. He stated that he would be open to the idea of me returning to the team, and spent most of the conversation explaining how the environment had changed for the better, and how me potentially returning would contribute even more to the standing of the team. As I didn't leave on bad terms and really missed the businesses I supported whilst there, I must say I was extremely keen and humbled by the idea of returning. Post the meeting, I sent him an email thanking him for his time He responded by saying that I need to give him a few days and that he will come back to me.
Exactly one week and a day after we had met, I received a call from him and he said 'Yes I definitely want you back'. We discussed what I was on when I left, and also my current notice period. The phone call ended with him stating that he would send an official email out to me in the morning, and for me to go ahead and hand in my notice. Obviously that evening I felt extremely happy and humbled by the idea of going back to a place that I felt happy at.
The next morning, I received the following email from him;
'Hi *****, I will be sending out a contractor to you shortly. Please look to negotiate a quick release if possible'
Then to my astonishment, he calls me on the mobile less than 30 minutes later. Sorry, it looks like we won't be able to go through with bringing you back as some issues have been highlighted. I tried to push him to highlight what issues, and he was vague. But he mentioned details with regards to issues with the business and the team, and how he needs to investigate it. He would need to investigate it, and would come back to me in 24 hours. That he was sorry he had to do this.
In 13 months supporting 3 businesses, I never had one difficult conversation or ever get asked any questions with regards to performance. HR also couldn't be a factor given that when hired, I was only interviewed by the recruitment manager as I was a contractor. Only a few members of the team remain from my days there, so I can only assume someone in the team has decided to say things about me, which he has now taken to heart? Again, extremely puzzling as not once did I have a single difficult conversation with any of them. Have I been defamed by cowards, who couldn't say things to my face when there, but are now trying to influence the manager to not take me back?
The above experience has left me almost heart broken, and today I could hardly concentrate on my current work. I feel very let down, to the point that even if he comes back with positive news, I wouldn't accept to go back to an environment that apparently 'raised issues'.
What do I do? Whilst my current role is challenging given the mentality in this particular sector, I have achieved a lot and again my manager is very happy. the company operates a 6 month probation, which I got thru with no issues, and even being told 'we wonder why you decided to join us, because you could work for any company you want'.
The sad part is, my parents are very supportive. I share everything with my mum, and telling her the good news last night made her very proud. Now of course, I have to tell her that it was nothing but hot air.
