  • Do I have to do all the overtime my mangers forcing me to do

    Hi

my manager is giving me notice that in the next 3-4 weeks that she is increasing my overtime. According to the wording of my contaract below do I have to do all the overtime or can I do some or none?

    My contract states:-
"your hours of work are 25 hours per week. These hours may be increased or decreased according to the business need. You will be required to work on Saturdays. As you are employed in retail you can be required to work on Sundays, however you may opt out of Sunday working. Full details are in your employee handbook.you will be required to work additional hours as required by your Manager. Reasonable effort will be made to give you advance notice".

Within reason, and the Working Time Directive, yes they are entitled to do so.

What is the increase? i.e what patterns do you work now and what are they proposing?

I assume this will be an extra 2 hours per day then?

Does this affect anything at home such as childcare?

Yep 2 extra hours a day

no childcare issues but it could affect my housing benefits.

Ahh right with you now. Have you spoken with housing, as it is only temporary, assuming it is because of the run up to Christmas, the effect may be negligible. I honestly don't know if how much it would alter things so I will hand over to others to answer.

10 hours per week for 3-4 weeks is perfectly reasonable and the effect on housing benefit would be negligible at best when looking at the effect on your annual benefit. Simply inform the council by taking a copy of the letter with you. They will probably want to see your wage slips for those weeks, and for the week prior and week after (when your back on normal hours). You will probably see a slight increase in rent you have to pay those weeks, but then be back to normal rent payments after.

Alternatively, speak to your store manager about your concerns on the effect it will have on your housing benefits and see if they will reduce the amount your being asked to do.
