  • Text sent in error

I've been with my current employer for 13 years, spotless record, even managed to win a couple of national awards.

This morning my immediate manager sent a text message to his boss, criticizing my work. Only he sent the text to me by mistake.

I feel thoroughly undermined by this. I can't help wondering how long this has been going on, but at the same time, I work away from the office and I'm not sure how to proceed, if at all. Perhaps this sort of thing happens all the time and I'm taking it too personally.

It would be interesting to know what my legal position is though, given that it was only his fat fingers that meant I saw the text in the first place.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

If you feel that this criticism is uncalled for, you could start a complaint through your company's grievance policy ..... especially as the text message was sent to you so you have proof of the criticism. :tinysmile_twink_t2:

      Re: Text sent in error

      Hi,
You should confront the manager concerned and ask why he never consulted with you, before sending the text.
If his answer is not to your satisfaction, the you should raise a grievance with his immediate boss, outlining your concerns.
If you have not got a copy of the grievance procedures, then ask your manager for them.
You should write a letter, thus.......

FAO, (name of your managers boss)
      Date;

      Dear Mr (name),
It has come to my attention, that my immediate Manager (Mr.....?) has sent you a text criticising certain elements of my work.
I consider this to be an unacceptable practice by Mr...? and feel that he should have consulted with me in the first instance.
Having been with the company for 13 unblemished years, I feel this is not the way to solve any issues, and certainly not the correct procedure in dealing with problems.
I request that you give my complaint your immediate attention, to avoid this sort of behaviour in the future.
      Yours Sincerely,
      (your name)

Keep a copy of this letter.
      Good luck...

Notwithstanding that the text was sent to you there is absolutely nothing to prevent managers discussing the performance of employees.

You haven't disclosed the nature of the criticism and, sorry to say, 13 years services does not mean that you are beyond reproach.

        Devil's advocate.

If the manager concerned has a problem with one of his workers, the correct and proper procedure is to consult with the employee first.
If no satisfaction from the employee, then he takes it to a higher level.
After all, the manager could be mistaken or completely wrong.
Procedure must be followed by all concerned.

Yes indeed John, but as I said, there is nothing to stop managers discussing an individual, maybe as a precursor to having that discussion with the individual concerned. We simply don't have the context.
