  • Do I have to do all the overtime

    Hi guys,

My contract states:- "your hours of work are 25 hours per week. These hours may be increased or decreased according to the business need. You will be required to work on Saturdays. As you are employed in retail you can be required to work on Sundays, however you may opt out of Sunday working. Full details are in your employee handbook.you will be required to work additional hours as required by your Manager. Reasonable effort will be made to give you advance notice".

What my question is, if I do some of the additional hours my manager requires,would/could I get in trouble? For example if told my manager I can only do an additional 10 hours max on top of my 25 hours would I get in trouble? Some people at work do less then 10 or even do none at all.

some of my colleagues get away with doing no additional hours and there shift days and times never get changed. They are the mature colleagues that have been there for years and they seem to get all there way. Is this fair? Can something be done about this?

As far as I know we are all on the same contract terms.

    Regards

    steven

Well you can certainly opt out of Sunday working.
You should decide a reasonable amount of overtime that you are prepared to work, and notify your company of this, in writing.
If they ask you to do more, then tell them you think it is unreasonable, as you are aware of other staff members who do less hours than you.

Do I need to give a reason why i am opting out of Sundays if the manager asks?

Would I be able to do something if the managers starts changing my usual days I'm In work?

Unless your contract of employment states that you must give a reason, then the answer to your question is NO.
Just say for personal reasons, or even religious regions.
