  • Forward facing camera

Hi, in our work vehicles we have forward facing cameras, this is generaly a good idea. They are triggered by sudden movement (harsh braking etc ) or a manual button. The company are now wanting to have them run permanently on a loop, again no problem. What i do have a problem with is they also want to run the audio aswell. Can they just do this ?
    Thank you in advance

Have they given a reason for wanting to record the audio? Is the audio they want inside or outside the cab?

Hi the audio is inside the cab, so every sneeze belch or anything else can be heard. They have said the adio is invaluable when doing an ivestigation and for onward training. If they have visual i dont see where verbal can add to this. It is felt that it is only being done for disiplinary reasons.

I'm pretty sure that there's been another thread on the same issue in the last few months I'll see if I can find it, otherwise I'll ask Tools to pop his head in later on this evening as it's more his area than mine.

Service buses and express coaches are fitted with CCTV systems which incorporate audio recording. Probably the ICO is the best authority to answer the OP's query. They should be able to provide up-to-date advice on in-cab cameras in LGV's.

See this document, specifically page 15

Where video or audio monitoring is justified, target the monitoring,
where possible, at areas of particular risk, and only use it where workers
                wouldn’t expect much privacy.
If you are stationary or on a tacho break you should expect privacy, although a contentious issue whilst driving you are performing your duties and the company is entitled to monitor. The drivers should raise the issue of DPA and privacy, I know for a fact( I am a HGV Technician ) it is possible to configure the parameters on these systems, one of which could be "no audio recording whilst stationary" or similar depending on the device fitted. Failing that PM me with the make/model and I may be able to advise you on how to get around it

When I was a policeman, working shifts played havoc with the digestive system of one of my colleagues. One night shift, we were on an observation duty together and were in an observation vehicle, usually an unmarked van with means of observing what was going on outside. As a group of people walked past the van, my colleague emitted an audible sound from his nether regions. My thought was "That's it. We've blown the obo." Not so. We heard one of the group outside say to another member of the group, "Was that you?"
