I will appreciate if you can take a little bit of your precious time to read this email. After my graduation from Uni in 2010, i was desperately looking for a full time career/non-career job because my immigration status didn't permit me to work full time while studying. Fortunately, on the 4th of January, 2011 i was called for a trial to be a breakfast chef by Nick, the former head chef. He trained me for two days and on the final day of training he told me he will be evaluating my performance on weekly bases,a couple of weeks later he offered me the job because he was very impressed with my efficiency, effectiveness and many positive feedback from customers.
I was very determined to give the best of my abilities for the job despite all the challenges. I had to wake up at 1:00 a.m, walk 25 minutes to get a night bus because there was non where i was living. If for any reason i miss the bus i had to get a taxi (£28 out of my pocket) i couldn't afford to go late because i am by myself. Fortunately for me after one and a half year ITV daybreak started providing me with a taxi because they were very happy with my service.
One and a half years of dedicated service i requested to speak to the head chef regarding my wages (I was on £8.6 per hour, kitchen porter rate for all these while). He told me that i deserve a pay rise considering my shift and my responsibilities but he have to speak to Yann, the manager. A couple of weeks later, he told me Yann has been made redundant. I personally arranged a meeting with Yann, he told me he is leaving soon that i have to speak to the new manager.
On 13/12/12 i arranged to meet with Adrian, the new manager. He said considering the fact that i have double responsibilities and i am doing unsociable hours i deserve it but he have to speak to Lynne. One month later, i reminded him about our last meeting he said he was still waiting for feedback from Lynne.
In February 2012 while Lynne was on holidays, Adrian told me he had a word with Siobhan about my wages, he said Siobhan told him as soon as Lynne comes back from holiday they should do something about my wages. Lynne came back from holidays, again i never heard from either of them.
Late February 2013, i told Adrian i am still waiting for feedback regarding my wages, he told me because Yann and Daze are still in the payroll they can't do anything until they leave.
Adrian went for two weeks holiday on the 25/3/2013. I decided to speak to Lynne on the 27/3/13, i was shock when she told me Adrian has never told her anything about my wages but she promised to speak to him when he comes back from holiday
On the 29/03/13 after Adrian came back from holiday i reminded Lynne again she told me i have to speak to Adrian.
On the 24/05/13 i arranged the final meeting with Adrian, he said the situation has changed because they have just employed Vincent and Sean but fell short to say no.
On the 28/5/13 i had a tip off that i am earning less than the head kitchen porter. I explained my situation to the senior head chef Adrian's assistant, he told me its very unfair he suggested i speak to Adrian again on that day. I met Adrian after work, he told me i don't deserve a pay rise because for me to get one i have to be promoted, assigned additional responsibilities or changed of position.
I was very disappointed with the treatment i have had for all these months but was determined than never before to continue to give my best and not allow injustice or discrimination to deter me from doing my job.
After several meetings with them, i decided to record and take notes and date of our conversations for evidence considering the inconsistencies in their response.
In May 2014, we were briefed on new training opportunities and that any interested applicant should speak to the head chef, Adrian. After consideration i approached Adrian and asked him if he could enroll me for chef academy September 2014 intake. He told me he its very possible and considering my roll now i will be exempted from the entry level, i will start at stage two. Three weeks later i reminded him again he told me he has given the form to the assistant manager, Vincent for approval. A week after i told the assistant sous chef, Yareed about my training he promised to speak to Adrian. The following day he told me Adrian said he is still waiting for Vincent. To my dismay they decided to sponsor a customer service assistant for the chef accademy eventhough she has only been less than 2 years with the company.
In Mid June 2014, Adrian told me he has tabled his resignation and his last day at work is the 4th July 2014. I reminded him on how he failed me and wished him good luck. Adrian is now gone, and now is a relief executive chef, Sean. He called me for a short briefing on my roll as a breakfast chef, i seized the opportunity to tell him about my ordeal, he promised to channel it to Lynne's boss, Aileen.
On the 15/08/2014, Sean the relief chef told me ITV wants us to provide full English breakfast at 4:30 a.m starting September. I told him considering my work load it will be practically impossible for me to do it and suggested they get another chef for that because for the past two years they have been assigning a chef (to come in and do half of what they want me to do in addition to my current job).
I have to say that despite all the maltreatment or injustice from my employer, the only reward i have had is from ITV our client. Like any other contract worker (Elite, baxterstorey etc) in the building, we have had 6% pay rise for the past two years, 3% for January 2013 and 3% for January 2014 if you add this up my current wage is £9.20 per hour.
Thank you all in advance for your feedbacks and time.
Kind regards.
