Actually it is because I have had cancer and it is in remission, I have check ups once a year to make sure it is not coming back!

Then you have full protected characteristics

It should be taken as a sick day and not taken off annual holiday entitlement though exempt from the Attendance procedure

I asked if the appointment took all day? If this is a Small company they may think rightly or wrongly like I do that the appointment does not take all day?
I think the OP needs to speak to the Managers and explain what happens at the appointment that takes all day they seem a bit uncaring or are they ignorant like me of what happens at the appoibtment.

wales01man yeah you are right, sometimes it does take all day, if i have heart and lung function tests, and when they see something weird in my blood they panic and do more tests, sometimes i am there for just 2-3 hours, but the hospital i go to is not near my workplace because i prefer to go to the hospital where all the doctors know me.

But i will ask them next week and update them on my situation, because it has never been an issue before i feel as though i am missing out on that 1 day of freedom which is something i think i am entitled too!

I just thought that if no one has challenged it in 5 years that i would have acquired the right for that to continue....

Talk to them I expect they know very little about what happens.

yeah i will do, just wanted to gather all the facts before i talk to them, this new person has taken this role with a lot toughness with no common sense, a lot of people have been complaining about her in the office, i think they are waiting for me to complain first lol

Does your company know you are having or have had, treatment for cancer?
Have you supplied them with enough information about your current condition?
Sorry, but I was not aware of this...

Hi johnboy that's fine, no i try not to tell people only if they need to know, so possibly in this instance they will need to know now!

                      Hi,
Well my friend you really should have told your employers a long time ago.
If they are unaware of your condition, then you cannot reasonably expect them to act in any other way.
I know what cancer is, and what it can do, not only to the patient, but to the family as well.
I lost a much loved younger brother in 2010 and it was heartbreaking.
Explain to your manager your condition.
Ask him to review the decision not to allow a sick day for your appointments.
If he is any kind of a human being he will see your point.
“The only man who sticks closer to you in adversity more than a friend, is a creditor.”

Agree with Johnboy If you don't tell them how would they know most of my hospital appointments from leaving home to returning are less than 1 day they may well think you are going shopping or enjoying yourself on their sick pay .
