  • Company not going through with my job offer

    Hi,

I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct place to be posting this, but I thought I would get some advice from people who know more about this sort of stuff than I do.

I have recently graduated from college, but several months ago I attended an interview at a company who were looking for a website designer. The job was only part time and would be able to fit around my college. I was impressed by the company, and they also liked me. They said they would prefer me working full time, so I would contact them when my course finishes. I did have university applications at the time and that was discussed, but they told me that I would be paid well to make sure I took the job instead. I was happy with the outcome. I received an email shortly after confirming this.

My course finished mid-June, so I sent them an email at the beginning of June to tell them that I would be able to work soon and I gave them a date. I didn't receive any response, so a week later I called them and they told me that they did receive the email and it was forwarded on to the department that I would be working for and they are waiting on them getting back. I waited another 2 weeks and didn't hear anything, so I sent another email - no response. I called them - no reponse. I waited another week, called them yet again and someone else answered the phone. When I asked to speak with the person who was dealing with my recruitment, they said he no longer works with the company and there was no record of me on their system. They took my details and told me they will be in contact with me soon. An hour later I receive an email saying they have changed their business strategy and cannot offer me the position. I replied saying I was disappointed and asked for contact information for someone higher up in the company.

If anyone can give me any extra advice, I would be grateful. I am able to PM the full details, including the emails between myself and the company if required.

You can have an implied contract, the only stipulation is that a full contract of employment particulars are given within 60 days

Thank you both for replying. The email I received after my interview:

Thank you for attending your recent interview. I can confirm that we were pleased with your performance and wish you to contact myself when your course is nearer completion and we can have you meet to discuss working for our Online Department.

In the meantime, should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I have bolded the word discuss as that's the key word. I'm aware that this is not a formal offer, however, I was told in person that they wanted me working full time. There were two people interviewing me, one of them no longer works there. The person who spoke with me today has just brushed this out of his hands, but I'm sure if he spoke with the second person who interviewed me, he could confirm what I have been told.

I replied to his email today by saying that it's completely unethical doing this and he has told me it will be passed on to the HR department.

ssparks2003, I already have university applications, so as far as I'm concerned I am still going there, however, this job was something I was interested in.

Then you have no case, only a formal job offer will be seen as a contract, implied or substantive

            Sorry

I assumed that at the beginning, just wanted confirmation. The person I am dealing with has passed me on to the HR department, so I will see where that takes me.

              Thanks for your help.
