  • Self Assessment-employed or self employed??

I am trying to help my 19 year old Grandson with a tax return and to be honest am having difficulty understanding what he/we should do.
After leaving college in September 2013 he started work with a steeplejack company. His wages were paid into his bank and he was happy working and getting paid. He never got a pay slip and has now ceased working for them. The company asked him a couple of weeks ago to get a UTR number and it now seems he has to complete a self assessment tax return. The company have held his last wages pending receiving the UTR number. In the absence of a pay slip, p45 or p60 we cannot complete the forms.
Does he need some form of wages statement from the company?
Does he need to complete self assessment? and if so employed or self employed?
He, in my opinion, did not earn enough in the 2013-14 (September-April) tax year to be liable for tax. we do not know if the company has deducted tax from the wages paid. If they have he would be due a rebate, if they haven't he should not be liable for any tax anyway but the forms say HE MUST complete a self assessment form or be fined if not completed on time (Oct 2014). I have spent ages on the phone to the tax office and have not been able to get a reply.
