  • Do I have to do all the overtime my managers gives??

    Hi everybody.

in my contract it says I will be required to do overtime alongside my contracted 20 hours a week.

what I would like to know is since it doesn't state a minimum amount of overtime I have to do, could I get in trouble if i only did 2-4 hours extra overtime per week instead of the 10-12 hours my managers wants me to do??

    kind regards

    Hi Steven and welcome,

That all depends on the wording in your contract and what was agreed/discussed at the time of taking the job.

Many contracts state for example "you will be required to work overtime where reasonably requested and given appropriate notice".

For example, if they ask you to work an extra 6 hours giving you 2 hours notice that would be deemed unreasonable, if however they asked you one week to work an extra 2 hours/day the next week, that would not be unreasonable. It depends on how regular you were being asked to do it and what detrimental effect it may cause to you, for example additional childcare costs etc.
