  • Change of working conditions

This is my first post and I'm at a bit of a loss as to my situation.

I've worked for the same (small) company for almost 9 years. About 2 and a half years ago I moved country (same timezone but to my wife's home country (much better climate and food) ) and after negotiations was allowed to work from home and travel over to the office in England once every 2 months at my own expense. We agreed to trial this and after 2 years I bought a house and am very settled here (as is my wife and child).

As far as I know nothing was ever changed in my contract to reflect this. There was a very standard contract signed when I started but that has never changed (despite come changes to holiday allowance - to the detriment of longer serving staff).

Recently we've had a change of structure and I've been told that I need to be office based every other week (with travel at my own expense) and possibly every week in the future. I've been basically told that the options are as follows:

    1. Come in when they want, at my own expense.
    2. Move back to England and be in the office full-time.
    3. Leave

It almost feels like they're trying to force me out the door and I'm not sure if what they are doing is all above board.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Re: Change of working conditions

When you say "we agreed to trial this" at what point did the trial end? From the sounds of it the trial is ongoing. If that is the case then I suspect that you are regrettably on thin ice I'm afraid.
Nothing I say should be taken as qualified expert advice. I am not an expert in anything.

If you decide to act on anything I have posted you agree not to hold me liable in any way.

If you are unsure then you need to take proper advice from someone who is an expert.

Nothing was ever formalised and I think that's the issue I'm going to face.

After the initial 6 months my boss said it was all going fine and was happy for me to continue working abroad. He's now saying it was only ever a trial and I need to be in the office more.
