  • reintroducing same job under a different name (people made redundant)

Hi, There were recent managerial changes made in the company I work for, and my position as "Team Coach" which I had been in for approx 5 years was described as not needed anymore, because of the nature of the business, areas of engineers in the country were 'looked after' by 13 team coaches and 13 area managers. I was told that the team coach role was being phased out and an exiting new role that we could apply for was one of 8 positions as a 'regional support assistant'. This would be instead of 1 team coach in each area, it would have 2 regional support assistants per quarter of the uk. By the scale of things this would mean if I applied for the new role I would be away from home at least 3 or 4 days a week, or I could take redundancy, or there would be an opening back as an engineer (where I was 6 years ago)
This all happened last July 2013 and I could not afford to take the redundancy or the new role and be away for so long, so I opted for going back as an engineer.
As I used to be around a lot of different people in the business, I soon got to hear that the managers could not cope without the one on one support of the team coaches and made requests at meetings soon after our restructure..... Long story short they have re-advertised for area support assistants and now have been conducting interviews, I have seen the job description and what is expected, and it is the same as my old role....it is the same job but with different title.
I spoke to managers about it and was not encouraged to apply as it "wouldn't be your cup of tea"....you will still be away from home etc.( I had been doing the job for just over 5 years)
I suppose what I am asking is, " should they have asked/spoke to me about this seeing as I was taken from a role that was no longer going to exist, only to reintroduce under another title?
Are they allowed to bring back the same job so soon (called something else) I suppose my big problem is that 3 people took the redundancy option and I was the only one who stepped backwards into the engineer role, so I am the only one querying this as the others are no longer around?
Should I, put up and shut up or query this?
I have just spoken to a work colleague that has been pushed and 'badgered' to go for the job and he has just had his second interview. He told me about the interview and it is exactly the same job....but different job title.
Not sure what I should do next?
I have worked for them for nearly 8 years with no break in service and full time employment

Re: reintroducing same job under a different name (people made redundant)

    Update:
Just been told by my colleague that he has now been offered the job, with view to start the role within the next 2 weeks.
    Can I now do something?

Positions are made redundant not the person filling the position (strange i know, but true) and can be given new titles as a result of restructuring. Basically they clearly had economic business reasons to reduce the amount of team coaches, and restructured the role to involve larger areas to cover whilst reducing the total number of people carrying out the work involved in the role.

Its the position that is made redundant, as said above, not the role. So the role performed could just as easily have been passed on to people in over positions, or new positions created to perform said role. Which is basically what has happened here. Though if more nights away from home are involved then there has also been slight changes to the role as well.

So basically, you have no grounds in my opinion to do anything - Plus it will be too late now even if you did have grounds to do anything.
