  • Can an employer change your job role before you start the job?

    Hello,

I was hoping some of you may be able to offer me some advice. I was offered a job some weeks ago which I accepted. I started this job on Monday. When I arrived at the office I was informed that my job title and description would be changing as the role that I had been offered and contracted to do was being split. I was obviously very shocked to hear this and also a little annoyed as I had accepted the job offer based on the job description that I had been given and I did not like the sound of the new split job role.

I have a meeting with my managers to discuss my concerns but I was wondering where I stand with regards to employment law. Is the company legally allowed to change the job title and description in between me accepting the job and starting it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

From the moment they offered the job and you accepted, a contract of employment existed.

For them to then change that would need a variation, agreed by both parties.
