smoking in work shop

Not sure if this is the right bit but sure admin will move me if necessary.
Its not exactly employment, i volunteer once a week at a local museum during the winter exhibits are either repaired or repainted ready for the new season and this is inside a big barn like shed.
One of the other "workers" continues to smoke his roll ups on a regular basis inside this building.
Yesterday I saw him whilst he was using paint!
Not an anti smoker by any means but don't smoke myself and don't like the "smell".
there are "no smoking" signs around is there any thing I can do?
Not liking to say anything as he is bigger than me and no one else seems worried.:flame:

If its a place of work its ILLEGAL and the owners/curators are liable to a fine same as the offender.

Could cause issues in your work so assess the situation fully before speaking to the foreman. eg. Is the foreman 'friends' with the smoker ? // Is the 'smoker' a full time employee or another one day a week volunteer ? Is the building fully enclosed etc ? How much of an issue is it to you, is it a case of being concerned health and safety wise, or you just don't like the smell ?
A friendly approach may be all that is needed as he may not even realise it is noticed by anyone (would you mind not smoking inside as it affects me etc) rather than going straight in with a 'that's not allowed I'm going to inform the foreman' type attitude. It is illegal to smoke in the workplace so you can inform the 'boss' who should take action to stop it, but be aware it could affect your working relationship with colleagues.

With respect AME if its an enclosed workshop its illegal to smoke it also may void an u=insurance policy if a fire started due to someone smoking there,

Non Smoking laws apply to ALL enclosed public spaces, if its is more than 50% enclosed. Even a smoking shelter has to be 50% non enclosed. So its not just Workplaces, but everywhere that is public even if its not general open to general public, and is an enclosed area.

Whilst i sympathise with the likely desire to not make this a big issue, and keep it informal. There are serious implications here as pointed out by Walesman. It should be pointed out to the person smoking, that if there was a fire and evidence of smoking was found, that the insurance would be invalidated, and he may then be liable to pay the cost of any repair.

i think most insurance policies of this nature, state in the terms that no smoking is allowed on the insured premises, and any smoking on the premises would void the insurance policy.

Yes I know, I'm just thinking of dogtired's working environment. It is against the law we agree, I think dogtired is trying to work out how best to handle it.

Yes i know you are Amethsyst. So it is up to Dogtired how he chooses to approach it, i personally if i was in dogtired shoes, deal with it using a friendly and informal approach, asking them to smoke in the entrance instead. Most smokers are considerate of others, and will smoke elsewhere if asked too. I smoke myself, and i would certainly go smoke in the entrance way, rather than smoke inside if it effected others and they had told me. But then, actually i wouldn't smoke inside a public place anyway, no matter how much i miss having a cig at the bar with my pint lol.

I am a she!
Yes I was working out the best way to go about it, most of us are volunteers.
He and the " foreman" appear to be friends.
Mainly it a safety issue as there is paint and varnish around,as said before its basically a big shed like barn which has two doors, one a double. Also being a museum some of the items are irreplaceable.
I could ask if I could go else where suppose.

Why should you have to move to a different area because someONE is inconsiderate to other people and insists on 'sparking up' a smelly cigarette.
ALL SMOKERS SHOULD SMOKE OUTSIDE THE WORKPLACE....it stinks,it permeates clothes and is a choice of the smoker to smoke,,,the non smoker has no choice but to passively inhale the fumes.
E-cigs are a waste of money IMO Cloggy.
Oh and before anyone leaps on me for having an opinion........I SMOKE....TOO MUCH..BUT I DO SMOKE

Strangely enough I loved the smell of my god fathers pipe!
I don't mind as in the other building I will be on my own!
Did try cigies once, you do when your young dont you, they were menthol ones and were horrible!
Put me off, could not afford to now.

I rue the day I started smoking DT..but have never succeeded at stopping...cos I enjoy it...and all my family know it's not up for debate.But I do consider others and never smoke in anyone elses house,,even if they don't mind.
I tried the e ciggies,,,useless tbh.....fair play to those who get on with them,,I didn't.

You are very lucky, DT! It's (arguably) the most addictive drug known to man and you escaped.

As a non-evangelical ex-smoker - I love the smell of cigarette smoke (particularly Gitanes in French restaurants) and I love joining the smoker's group outside the party (usually the most interesting) - so not being a kill-joy or whatever.

But the main argument against your colleague's activity - ie that it's illegal, puts you all at risk and could lead to horrible penalties - would suggest that it would be a good idea to just tell him this and ask him to smoke outside...btw if he finds he can't cope with the withdrawal whilst working, there is stuff like chewing gum, lozenges, etc. which might tide him over xx

Oooh MissFM......my Mum had to give up smoking but loved the smell of a newly lit cigarette (with a match,,not a lighter)
