  • Employment law; gender discrimination?

A young male nurse saw job vacancy for a matron at a boys school. He enquired about it and was told that only a woman would be considered. Now if it was said to be only suited to a man or if it were a girls school and it was said to be only suited to a woman, that may be reasonable, but in this instance surely the very feminist title of 'matron' is illegal?

If a jobs requires someone of a specific gender to do it, it generally has this blurb at the bottom:

The above post is restricted to female applicants only under the Equality Act 2010

Sometimes we have jobs that only women can do, for certain reasons, i.e. a domestic violence worker for women. Due to the nature of the role and the experiences of the women it is felt more appropriate that only women do the job. Finding it a little hard to understand how a male nurse couldn't do the matron's job at a boys school though....

Why is it restricted to females when it is a boys-only school? A man can do the job every bit as well. The restriction to females only implies that all males are child abusers? Is this a case for the European Court?

Because women are inherently more violent than men?
