  • New job, new contract Notice period seems unfair.

I have just started a new job and it seems like a good fit. Enjoying the work and looking forward to the challenge.

My issue is the contract I've just been handed – which I have yet to sign. None of us know what the future holds – certainly not looking to move on already but the notice period I would be expected to give, even now after a few days, seems unreasonable in relation to the notice period that they have to give me.

It looks like I am obliged to give them 3 months notice from day 1 yet they only have to give me 1 week during my probation (which is 6 months). This rises to 4 weeks after probation but I would have to be there 12 years (1 week for every year) before they would match the level of loyalty that they expect me to show from the off.

Although I believe in my abilities I don't consider myself hot enough property for another potential employer to wait 3 months for me to work notice should I choose to move on in the future. Does this sound like a reasonable contract? Don't want to talk myself out of a potentially good job but I need to confront this issue before I sign up.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

The above is what ACAS have set out. Is everyone's contract at your firm the same? Rejecting the contract imho will lead to one road and that is probably with your exit from that firm after they have given you the statutory 1 week's notice.
