  • Minimum Travel Payment with Employer

    Hi

I have a query with regards to minimum payment for travel to and from work.

I am employed full time with my employer and we are paid on a per job basis, so if we arent given any jobs we dont get paid, we are normally paid £80 per job which requires us to be on a customer site for upto 8 hours.

My issue is with the travel, we are provided with a company van and fuel card but are only paid 7 pence per mile travelled, so whether we are 5 minutes or 5 hours away from home we will only ever get 7 pence mile, so if i'm working 3 hours from home and its 180miles away I will only receive £12.60 which is far below the minimum wage.

Does anyone know if there is a minimum amount that should be paid for travel or is what I have described acceptable?

    Thanks
    Brian

Re: Minimum Travel Payment with Employer

    Hi and welcome.

I understand that travel between home and place of work are not considered part of your working hours.
    (see here ://www.gov.uk/minimum-wage-different-types-work/overview)
It would follow that an employer doesn't have to pay for that time.
However, in view of the time you might spend travelling, is there any chance of negotiating an increased rate for the longer journeys. Of course that would increase your income tax!
