I'm wondering if anyone could give advice as to where I stand on an issue I'm having at work.
The background: I have worked for a large London based company for 13 years. Part of the company is relocating to the South Coast and so I was offered the choice to a) reocate (not an option for me), b) get deployed in job that would be staying in London (if one should be available) or c) take 'voluntary' redundnancy. I chose the redeployment option but I am now also one month into my 3 months notice period for redundnancy. I got offered a new London based job last week.
The story so far: I applied for a job that was advertised as a permanant role equivalent to the my existing role meaning all T&C's would remain the same including my current rights to redundnancy (which is 1 month for every year worked).
Last week I got offered the job in a face to face interview with HR. They asked me if I wanted to accept there and then and I said yes. Then they casually dropped the fact it was a fixed term 6 month contract, with potential for extention but basically I would be back in the redeployment system again and would not be entitled to any redundnancy at that point. I immediately told them that that was not how the role was advertised and asked for the contract to be re-negotiated so that I would have the same T&C's as my current role, as this was how it was advertised.
The next day HR confirmed, on the phone, that it was agreed that contract for this new role would have the same T&C's as my current role and so I accepted again over the phone. I then had an email from HR confirming my acceptance, etc.
Then today HR called me into a meeting and told me that the Senior Management Team that this role comes under have suddenly vetoed the change in T&C's and the role was changed back to a fixed term contract. I promptly complained that I had aleady accepted the role on the revised terms and why had it got this far only to be changed back again! Had the role not been through the proper approval channels, etc?
So, at the moment I'm currently cooling my heels over this and feeling very aggrieved by how I've been treated. I really don't know what to do. My question, utimately, is where do I stand? Can my employer muck around like this and just expect me to accept what they're saying? I'm so frustrated and also now face the lows that redundnancy brings after the highs of accepting, what I thought was, a good job offer and a chance to stay in the company I have been loyal to for the last 13 years. How do I handle this? Should I fight the decision (although I'm not sure I want the job now) or do I walk away and get on with life?
