  • change of shift hours

Excuse me but this is a touch complicating so read carefully...

I work nights for my company which has 1 shift with approx. 15 men starting 11.45pm til 8am with a "job and finish" type structure, and another shift with 5 men starting 11.45pm til 7.15am.

I was originally on the 11.45 - 8 shift but since having a child this put a strain on my partner looking after my son as i was not returning home at a regular hour so i requested that i swap with one of the 7.15 men. On the basis that I had leave at 7.15 no matter what 3 days per week and i would stay if i was really needed on the other two days.

    This was deemed acceptable....

Once i started leaving at 7.15 some of the others became unsettled as to why they could not leave at the end of their shift. And because of an escalation in arguments they have decided to move all 5 of us to a 12.30am - 8am finish, thus me losing any advantage to my homelife of the reduced hours.

My line manager was happy with my position and i had an agreement with his line manager as to what was expected, and i never once did anything to upset this yet I am now worse off with no job and finish and 4.5 hours per week down.

All arguments stemmed from the group of 5 line managers all having various ideas of what this shift is expected to do, hence the unrest in the employees.
The 11.45-8.00 shift regularly finish 30-45mins early. Whilst the other shift are lucky to finish 5-10mins early if at all but were expected to stay until the 11.45-8.00 shift had finished too. I had agreed to forfeit “job and finish” to guarantee to my partner that I be home at a specific time. Yet this was not passed on to the other managers so all arguments continued.
Really lost as to where I stand here. Can anyone help?
