  • Working unpaid overtime. Illegal? Slavery?

Can I be forced to miss my lunch break or work after my shift ends to complete my tasks?
Is it illegal? Is it slavery?
Ive been with the company for over 10 years.

    UK LAW

Do describe job, let's pretend I'm a brain surgeon.

I have to do 10 surgeries before lunch break. Some brain surgeries are complicated or the patient is not prepped quick enough for me or whatever, resulting in me not being able to complete 10 surgeries by lunch. So am I expected to work through my lunch and miss part of it?

Same situation for end of shift. Must I continue working after my shift ends to finish surgeries (including the ones just added in as extras)?

    The extra time is unpaid.

Can I put tools down at 5 pm and just go home?

Theres not a contracted amount of surgeries that i must do per day but the expectation is around 16

I'm no faster or slower than the average surgeon. Obviously, we do get the odd whizz kid surgeon who does so many surgeries that it makes you wonder if they're doing a good job but the company loves them.

    Thanks

I suggest that you raise this with the British Medical Association. They will be able to advise you.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf
