  • Unpaid lunch break

    Hi all,
I have read on Acas Web site that an employer should give you a minimum 20min lunch break if working for 6 hours or more.
My question is can an employer make you take a 30mim break when your working hours for the day is only 5.5 hours?
I have only realised I have been doing this for the last 6 months. Rather not take it as I didn't before only told I had to after new manager came.

    Thanks

20 minutes if you work 6 hours is the legal minimum. There is nothing to stop your employer giving more than the legal minimum so yes they can organise the working day in the way you describe unless (unusually) your contract is very specific about lunch breaks.

Has this reduced your paid hours? That is a different issue.

      Hi,

No not reduced my paid hours but I'm sure other people of my same grade don't take this break, I will have to enquire.
      Thanks
