  • Casual working during the Notice Period

    Hi, and thank you for accepting me into this forum.

    Having worked for a local authority for over 40 years, I now find my job at risk of redundancy due to financial reasons. I'm currently in the consultation process, which ends soon. It is likely that I'll be given 12-weeks notice, as finding a position within the organisation is hard at my pay grade level (I can apply for posts on my grade and one below). My team members have been offered redeployment positions within the organisation.

    I also have several casual roles within the organisation working with other departments in addition to my full-time post, which again I've held for several years. My question is: I've heard during the notice period that I will not be able to continue working the casual roles until the notice period ends, and I wondered if this is true or not.

    What reasons have been given?

    Is the casual work you do a formal or informal arrangement?

      Not been given the reason why, but I can ask this question when my consultation period ends this week. The casual roles are an informal agreement as it's up to me if I wish to do the work or not. I'm doing the polling station in May and been advised by our democratic services that as the payment to me for this is not directly from the local authority I work for, our head of legal can do me a letter to permit me working at poll station and count.

        There is nothing in employment law either way on this, so I would suggest that asking the question to see what they say would be far better than me trying to "second guess" their reasoning.
