  • Being compensated for unsociable hours and shift change

    My working schedule is changing.

My job is 9 am to 5.30 pm

Now it is being changed to 10 am to 6.30 pm. This is a new shift just been invented.

Sometimes it will be until 8pm.

The 9 am shift still exists but will mostly be done by a woman who says she cannot do the 10am to 6.30 because of child care.

Should I be compensated financially for having to work 'unsociable hours'? I know its not till the middle of the night unsociable but still late enough for me.

Is it fair that me being person without kids has to work 10 am to 6 pm?

There is no legal entitlement for employers to offer increased pay for working unsociable hours, if indeed working 10am-6.30pm would be considered unsocial.

I appreciate what you are saying regarding fairness to you that you will be required to work this shift due to your colleague's childcare commitments. It may be worth speaking to your line manager/HR to see if there could be some consideration given to it not always being you required to work this shift.
