  • Employment Anxiety

Good afternoon. I follow your tweets alot, and wanted some advice. I suffer from anxiety and on March 6th I started a new job. I couldn't make it in on the first 2 days, but managed the following 3 days. The next week I only managed half a day on the monday. On the Wednesday I got signed off by a dr until end of today. So in 3 full weeks I've managed 3.5 days in the office, with the other days signed off. I've decided not to go back there after a chat I had yesterday with them. They want to see my medical records, which I refused, and wanted proof that my child was ill for the other days (he wasn't, I used him as an excuse to my shame). Am I entitled to be paid for the 3.5 days I was in and the SSP? Many thanks.

For the 3.5 days you actually worked then yes you should be paid for these, however you need to have provided your employer with your bank details and either provided them a P45 or completed a Starter Checklist for PAYE. If you have not done this then you need to contact your now ex-employer about doing this so they can pay you.

To be eligible for SSP you need to be classed as an employee and have done some work for your employer, earn an average of at least £123 per week and have been ill for at least 4 days in a row (including non-working days). If you used your child being ill as a reason for absence this will not count.

I do my best to provide good practical advice, however I do so without liability.
