  • Made to stay at work with no power

Good Morning all, I am new to legalbeagles!
I have a query about my night shift at work I have just finished, I'll try to make the details as simple as possible.
I started my night shift as an engineer at 1800. When I arrived at my workplace yesterday, a factory which shares the site with a large storage/distribution company, there was no power to the whole site at all. The issue was a bust transformer which could not be fixed till some time today or later. So with this in mind, the plant manager made the decision to send everyone home Inc. Managers, but told me and the one other engineer we had to stay for the whole shift as "fire watch".
We had one building on site (which was closed down therefore not maintained) which is supplied by a seperate power source with a toilet that has not been maintained in over a year.
No access to drinking water, (taps with water were in the old building but no signage to say drinking water, so could not confirm if it was safe to drink).
No power, so no lighting and heating. The taps in our workplace are sensor taps so they did not work so unable to wash hands for the 12 hours after using the unkept toilets in the old building.
I had food with me for my shift but no means of heating it as we couldn't use the microwave/canteen facilities.
We were expected to do rounds every 30 minutes to check for fires by torch light, neither one of us are trained first aiders should one of us have an accident.
    Should this of been allowed?
    Thank you all

The conditions under which you are required to stay would be set out in The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/.../contents/made

There may well have been issues in you staying under sections 8, 21 and 22.
If you would like a one-to-one expert consultation with me on your employment issue than I can be contacted by emailing admin@legalbeaglesgroup.com

I do not provide advice by PM although I may on occasion ask you to send me documents this way but any related advice will be provided back on your thread.

I do my best to provide good practical advice, however I do so without liability.
If you have any doubts then do please seek professional legal advice.
