  • Help with employment (7/8 months into employment)

    Hi all,

I wonder if you can help.

I’m going to avoid making it obvious who I am in case!

    so the following happened

I joined a financial services firm in January this year (UK based)

I passed my probation in March, it was only 3 months long.

my boss (head of department) doesn’t do one to one’s, no one has performance mentoring. You’re just left alone.

My boss, another senior manager and a junior colleague go playing golf during work (2 times since I joined)

the junior colleague has been very rude about my girlfriend (he asked how much I paid her to call her my girlfriend.) so basically said she’s a prostitute.

I told a senior manager (who plays golf as part of the friendship group) and was told to “man up” and that it “isn’t a big deal”

recently my work has worsened due to zero support or help.

Recently a manager was on a call and said “what the f*ck is going on” to me directly.

    I was shocked and horrified.

im at the point where I want to probably leave as it won’t work. My boss has said a disciplinary process will begin.

I want to say that I’m happy to leave and just want

    3 month notice period
    my holiday pay
1/2 months in as an apology for this utter mess. I didn’t want to be treated to leave.

what is the best way to approach this and ultimately leave? Thanks in advance.

Do you know what the disciplinary process is likely to be about?

The issue that you have is that with 7/8 months of employment you have not yet reached the two year service for certain employment rights to be available to protect you and you can effectively be dismissed "lawfully" unless you can prove it was due to a limited number of circumstances or it was discrimination.

If you hand in your notice then they can hold you to the 3 months notice period and insist you work.

You could raise a grievance about your treatment and as part of that process try to agree your departure from the company.

      Thanks for reply.

It’s a performance improvement. I know I’m going to be leaving, I just want to ensure that I receive something as a form of compensation as the entire job has been a total waste of time for my career. ?

Unfortunately, given you have less than 2 years service and there is a potential of a performance management disciplinary I am not sure you have much to negotiate with.

The best way to approach this is via a discussion with HR about the lack of support and help you are getting which is possibly causing the performance issues and then lead on to how unhappy you are.
